For many people it is important to keep their cat indoors, for their cat’s wellbeing and to protect native fauna. However, this means that you will need to provide a space for your cat to go to the toilet. Teaching your cat to use a litter tray will require some patience and perseverance on your part, though by following these simple steps your cat should be using their tray exclusively and keeping your home cleaner as a result.
The items you will need for training your cat to use a litter tray include a plastic tray large enough for your cat to sit in comfortably, a litter scoop to remove waste material and some litter to fill the tray. Be sure to place the litter tray away from feeding areas and if possible somewhere quiet that offers a degree of privacy.
To begin training your cat, after feeding place your cat inside the litter tray and encourage it to dig with its front paws. Once your cat has successfully used the tray, praise and reward them. If your cat goes to the toilet elsewhere, show the cat the waste and then place it in the tray. Be calm and don’t scold the cat. With patience and perseverance your cat will learn to use the tray exclusively. Also, it is important to keep the tray clean, replace litter weekly and also wipe out the tray with disinfectant.
