Although most commonly seen lurking around sewerage pipes or rubbish bins, rats are not always as much of a pest as they appear to be. Much the same as hamsters and guinea pigs, rats make great pets, especially for children, and are easy to look after – some pet resorts offer accommodation for rats – and are adorable to cuddle.
Firstly if you are thinking of big scary sewer rats, think again. Pet rats are often known as fancy rats and they are very friendly and well worth getting to know. It’s best to have two of them as they are quite social pets, and they love being handled carefully by their owners. You’ll need a strong cage to house them in, made from metal or hard tough plastic, as rats’ teeth are known to chew through all kinds of things.
Another common fallacy about pet rats is that they tend to be smelly. In actual fact the only reason they would be smelly is if their cage was not kept clean. You will need to clean it regularly to ensure it is hygienic and replace used sawdust with fresh sawdust regularly.
It is good to keep pet rats entertained too. Cardboard tubes and small cardboard boxes are beloved by rats everywhere. They’ll play in them and chew them up too. It’s fascinating to watch them and to play with them regularly as well.
