Regularly checking your dogs and cats for signs of ticks is essential in order to rid them of potential tick infections such as tick paralysis. If you have never removed a tick from your furry friend before it is important to make sure that you do it right so as to remove all elements of the tick from their body. Watch this video for tips.
This video squashes some of the wild notions that you may have heard about how to get rid of ticks and provides you with an easy method. For this technique you will need tweezers or small forceps. Take your tweezers and grab onto the tick as close to the skin as possible and slowly remove the attached tick. Do not twist or bend, just slowly pull it straight out and place it in a small, plastic bag to take to your vet to be identified.
Don’t remove ticks with your bare hands; not only is this more difficult but you could end up leaving the head in your pet and expose yourself to tick transmitted diseases such as Lyme disease. Also don’t irritate the tick by trying out some of the wild ways to get rid of it that you may heard such as suffocating it with Vaseline, as all this will do is increase the likelihood that disease will spread to your pet as the tick will release more bodily fluids. Prevent ticks completely by asking your vet what products they recommend to ward of ticks and fleas.
